Volunteer Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue (SAR) has been an important part of my life for over 15 years. After getting my first working line german shepherd dog in 1999, I began researching K9 SAR. Most teams in the United States are volunteer units made up of every day people who feel called to use their skills in service of the community. Teams are made up of volunteers who spend a great deal of time and personal money to train their dogs to locate missing persons. These teams are available 24/7 in all weather conditions and respond to Fire department or Law Enforcement calls for missing persons.
Most SAR teams are considered Wilderness teams and generally respond in their own state and often nearby states. They search for lost and missing persons in wilderness areas (over due hikers, lost campers etc), suburban areas (run away children, alzheimer's patients etc) and in the wake of large storm damage. With my K9, Flint, I am part of NJ Rescue and Recovery K9 Unit. The unit trains 2x/month and has responded to many searches in NJ and Pa. For more information go to: www.njrescue-recoveryk9.org. There are many ways to support your local SAR team. They are always looking for new people to hide for the dogs. If you love dogs and the outdoors please contact me!
Other teams are specialized Urban SAR teams. These teams are either State supported (SUSAR) or federally supported (FEMA) and respond to large man made or natural disasters (collapsed buildings, extensive storm damage to structures). These teams deploy to their own states as well as travel to other states in the case of large disasters. I am part of a FEMA team have deployed many times with the team which is most active during hurricane season.
